3. An "individual" is a unit that cannot be broken up into parts--it is not divisible. We get into trouble when indivisibility invokes independence and separation from context. I am not reducible to parts, but this does not mean that my existence is possible without food, language, social interactions, and an oxygen-rich atmosphere. Though oxygen or other people seem more separate from "me" than my arm, my existence ultimately depends on them equally. Collectives cannot be divided without becoming something else, but both individuals and collectives are dependent on the shared.
